That quote is from one of the most awarded and celebrated movies of all time. While to be honest, I didn’t enjoy it that much, it did save 2 marriages. That’s a story for another day, and involved a violent game of Monopoly between another couple, Brandi and I. Hey, we were broke, married, and in college…board games ruled much of our lives. However, I think the most famous quote of “Titanic” nicely puts together the power and responsibility that God entrusted us with in His creation.
We were created to rule over God’s creation.
Let that sink in for a minute. God gave us the power to reign over this entire planet and everything on it. Our youth pastor, Ryan Dunn, just wrote a Bible study titled, “With great power comes great responsibility.” I think this is the net of this session from Sunday.
First, we have the responsibility to be good stewards of the beautiful creation around us. Now, I’ll never be accused of being a tree hugger, but we shouldn’t be abusing the resources provided to us.
The bigger issue for us to address with our kids is that our schools aren’t teaching them that God created this world, and that we as humans were made to rule over it. In fact, quite the opposite is proclaimed. They are taught that life sprang out of the muck and mire, that we evolved from monkeys, and that the animals are more important than us. This is a direct contradiction to God’s word from the very beginning to the very end.
We need to arm our kids with knowledge about the theories that are taught to them in the schools. We also need to teach them why we believe what we believe, and show them how those theories taught by science have huge holes in the that can only be explained by God’s power.
Talk with your kids this week about what they are learning in science about the origins of the world, and talk about your own beliefs. It will be an enlightening conversation.
