November 17,1990 was my 15th birthday. I got up, ate breakfast and Mom made my brother and I fold a load of towels. Then we loaded up in the car and headed to town. My brother had given away the surprise that awaited me while we were folding those towels, but I was still genuinely in shock about the fact that I was going to begin flight training.
Fast forward to June 2, 2013. Today, I made a “quick run” in my Legend Cub from our airpark home to our lake house at Possum Kingdom to get a few things. Later this afternoon I opened up the windows and doors and flew out over Lake Ray Roberts. I watched boaters going back and forth on the water. The weather was perfect. 74 degrees with a light north wind. Yes, it’s June. On the way back to the house, there were some guys harvesting a wheat field. As I pulled up to the hangar, I logged my 1,000th hour of flying.
So many twists and turns in life over the past 22+ years. I could never have imagined this milestone happening the way it did.
But it does give me cause to reflect on the extreme privilege I have had to fly most of my life. This milestone wraps up a goal I set a while back. I wanted to break that 1,000 hour barrier before I have knee surgery. Tomorrow.
Yeah, I know, I cut it too close. But I’m always proud of accomplishing a goal. I’m thankful for the opportunity to set and meet them in so many aspects if my life.
Today was a good day.
